Tenant Farmer Position – Medomak Camp and Retreat Center, Washington, Maine

Medomak Camp and Retreat Center is in search of a Tenant Farmer to oversee production and kitchen gardens. The Tenant Farmer will be responsible for planning, planting, and harvesting vegetables, herbs, and edible flowers sufficient to meet food requirements for two seasonal commercial kitchen operations.

Medomak Camp and Conference Center are located on 300 acres along Washington Pond in Washington, Maine. Medomak Camp offers a unique vacation destination where for 8 weeks in the summer, twelve families occupy cabins and participate in traditional summer camp activities. The Medomak Retreat Center is a full service facility that for 8 weeks in the summer can house up to 75 adults who register to participate in any one of a number of retreats and/or workshops, some of which last for only several days, while others last for over two weeks.

The job requires planting of required vegetables through the spring in anticipation of predictable harvesting to meet the food requirements when the Camp and Retreat Center are in session: June – August. Close coordination with Camp and Retreat Center cooks is required to insure that quantity of produce is meeting expectations. Upon conclusion of the season, the Tenant Farmer will be responsible for completing harvesting and overseeing preparation of the gardens for the winter.

Compensation will be in the form of providing the Tenant Farmer with exclusive growing rights to acreage of equivalent size to what will be used for producing vegetables for the Camp and Retreat Center. Medomak will bear the expense of preparing the soil used for camp and retreat center-related crops, as well as the land to be used by the farmer. The farmer will be able to use this exclusive acreage to produce cash crops for his/her own purpose: e.g. to sell to local restaurants/famers’ markets/grocery stores or the like. Also, if desired by the Tenant Farmer, arrangements can be made for rent-free housing on the Medomak Family Camp site.

The candidate must have documented experience in managing production gardens. References are required. The position will start in the spring (around March 1st) of 2018.

Medomak Camp is committed to hiring staff with proper experience and skills, and whose background documents their ability to safely accommodate adult and child campers. Our hiring policy is non-discriminatory based on race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, or national origin.
