Reports To: Board of Directors
Status: Exempt
Schedule: Varied; store is open 7 days/week, 360 days/year

Job Summary

The Gardiner Food Co-op Grocery & Café is seeking an experienced General Manager for our established and growing cooperative business. Located in the center of downtown Gardiner, Maine and borne out of a local effort to revitalize downtown Gardiner, our community and our cooperative rely closely on each other. We are seeking an experienced General Manager for our next phase of exciting growth and opportunity for the right candidate. Preference will be given to candidates with retail grocery experience, working knowledge of natural and organic foods, and/or management of a community-oriented business. All interested candidates are encouraged to apply.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

Lead day-to-day operations of retail cooperative grocery business
Plan and implement strategies to meet current goals and future growth objectives
Supervise and manage a team of 2-5 employees, including scheduling, payroll, and human resources to foster a fair, inclusive, and respectful work environment
Plan, monitor, and analyze key metrics of retail performance to maintain and improve organizational efficiency
Market and promote the business to reach new audiences to ultimately attract and maintain new customers and member-owners
Develop and implement budgets, maintain grasp of financial standing, and routinely pursue strategies to improve profitability
Collaborate among and between staff to effectively purchase, display, price, and promote grocery and cafe products
Actively improve customer experience and member-owner value and satisfaction
Devise strategies for process improvements to ensure long-term growth of the business and community benefit
Work effectively and in collaborative spirit with member-owners, community stakeholders, and Board of Directors


Proven experience in a managerial role of similar leadership capacity
In depth knowledge of diverse business functions and principles (purchasing, finance, customer service, etc.), preferably within cooperative business structures and values
Effective written and verbal communicator with proven experience and ability with Microsoft Office tools, email, QuickBooks, and other forms of business communication
Experience with POS systems and related retail business operations
Demonstrated ability to think creatively and inspire creativity among staff
High level of organizational ability and attention to detail
Basic knowledge of accounting principles, financial statements, and budgets
Must be willing to work a flexible schedule including early mornings, nights, weekends, and holidays
Must be punctual, enthusiastic, and set a positive example for coworkers and the public

Environmental Conditions

Works in a fast-paced environment with a focus on customer service
May work in environments of extreme cold and extreme heat for short periods of time
May travel periodically for meetings or trainings

Physical Demands

Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds
Must be able to bend, reach, stoop, kneel and squat
Must be able to push, pull, and maneuver heavy loads
