The community is invited to the annual Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) and Community Supported Fisheries (CSF) Fair in Belfast, taking place on Sunday, February 28 from 1-3 p.m. in the ground floor Abbott Room of the Belfast Free Library, at 106 High Street in downtown Belfast. There will be local, seasonal produce, sustainably harvested seafood, and products for sale and sampling. This event is free; all are welcome.
Part celebration and part education, "Meet Your Farmers and Fisherman: A Celebration of Community Supported Agriculture and Fisheries" brings local farmers, producers and fishermen together with members of the community to share information about opportunities to enjoy local foods while providing direct support to these enterprises in a meaningful way. Farms with Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) programs ask you to commit to purchasing a share of the coming harvest before the season begins, providing the farm with much-needed capital during the off-season, and providing shareholders with locally grown, freshly harvested food direct from the farm at a fair price throughout the growing season. Here in the midcoast, fishermen from Port Clyde Fresh Catch, a fishermen’s cooperative, offer a weekly Community Supported “Fish Drop”.
CSAs who've committed to attend the Belfast event thus far include: Bahner Farm - Belmont, Buckle Farm - Unity, Dickey Hill Farm - Monroe, Fine Line Farm - Searsmont, Roots and Wings Farmstead - Monroe, Streamside Farm - Brooks, Toddy Pond Farm - Monroe, and Villageside Farm - Freedom. In addition to farms with CSA shares, Glen Libby of Port Clyde Fresh Catch will be selling fresh, sustainably harvested local seafood from their fisherman's cooperative and providing information about their Community Supported “Fish Drop”.
The Belfast CSA+CSF Fair is sponsored by Maine Farmland Trust and the community-owned Belfast Co-op.
