Position: Tractor Operator and Infrastructure Assistant
Tentative Start Date: April 8, 2019 End Date: November 27, 2019
Hours: Mon-Friday 6:00/7:00 AM through 4:30 PM - Guaranteed 40 hours per week with possibly more required
Primary Supervisor: Eric
About: Harvest Tide Organics is medium-scale farm located in Bowdoinham, Maine that markets vegetables through a pre-boxed, delivered CSA, wholesale partners, and our in-town farm stand. We grow on approximately 16 acres of fertile, alluvial soil along the Kennebec River and Merrymeeting Bay in a tight knit community of other small vegetable and fruit growers. Our farm is certified organic by MOFGA and believes strongly in the value of organic and sustainable means of vegetable production.
Position Description:
This position is new to the farm this year and has been created due to the need for an increased number of operators needed on the farm and having added new equipment to our operation. This position works primarily alongside Eric (one of the two owners) on infrastructure projects, most tractor operation on the farm, and the execution of field preparation and maintenance. This position requires significant flexibility as the one who holds it will sometimes work unsupervised and will need to be self-directed to accomplish tasks safely, and at other times will work as part of a crew completing necessary tasks on the farm. A large portion of time for this position will be spent operating equipment and applicants are expected to come to this position with demonstrated experience operating equipment in an agricultural setting. The person chosen for this position will be trained on the equipment on the farm and specific Harvest Tide protocol for safely operating equipment and infrastructure.
The responsibilities of the position include but are not limited to:
Operate 3 different types of tractor in varying capacities on the farm (including gas tractor, farm trucks, and PTO equipment)
Primary, secondary tillage and precision cultivation
Operation of boom sprayer, with the following of pest management protocol
Mowing fields and operation of other power take off equipment
Assist Eric in basic equipment maintenance
Build and develop seasonal farm infrastructure
High tunnel and some greenhouse management (building, not plant care)
Irrigation system development and management
Fencing systems
Other season extension projects
Vegetable storage projects
Follow all equipment and safety protocol to a T
Maintain records on the activities performed as required
Maintain organization of storage spaces, tools, and equipment
Qualifications:
Required –
At least one year demonstrated experience operating farm/agricultural equipment and various implements
Demonstrated ability on multiple types of tractors, large/medium/small
Demonstrated ability or capacity to learn primary, secondary, and precision tillage
Demonstrated ability or capacity to learn PTO implements
100% commitment to safety and equipment protocol at all times
Experience with farm infrastructure
Drip irrigation systems
Electric Fencing
High tunnel maintenance
Ability to work without direct supervision and still adhere to strict quality and safety standards
Ability to receive constructive criticism for the improvement of efficiency and efficacy of tasks on the farm
Ability to work as part of team on the farm
Commitment to professional and constructive communication with co-workers, employers, and other staff at all times
Flexibility to work other farm positions as needed, and demonstrated experience in other areas on the farm

Compensation:
$12.50 - 14.00/hr depending on experience. This is ideally a multi-year position, with room for higher pay and more responsibility in future seasons with success in position
3 paid days off to be used during the season for illness or personal use

Discounted access to CSA “add-ons” such as yogurt, eggs, cheese etc
We offer an end of season Bonus to all full-time employees who finish out the season (Approx. November 27th)
