Corn painting in El Salvador
The rugged mountains of El Salvador are great for growing organic crops – especially perennial crops – but should not be subjected to mining for gold, silver and copper; and the new government of Mauricio Funes has taken steps related to both issues. Those were among the lessons that MOFGA’s El Salvador Sistering Committee delegation learned during its February 9 to 19, 2010, visit to its sistering organizations in El Salvador.

One hundred gorgeous, Maine-crafted bowls filled with delicious soup from Cleonice Bistro of Ellsworth; a cheerful crowd and uplifting music from Tree by Leaf: April’s Empty Bowl Supper benefiting MOFGA’s El Salvador Committee was a huge success. A brief talk by Dennis Chinoy of Bangor Sister Cities reinforced the reason for our connection with our sisters in the South.

The Beginning – Maine Organic Coffee Growers Travel to El Salvador – The blizzard of January 23-24, 2005, did nothing to quell the enthusiasm of the eight delegates traveling to El Salvador to visit and strengthen ties with MOFGA's sister organizations, CCR (Association of Communities for the Development of Chalatenango) and CORDES (Foundation for Communal Cooperation and Development of El Salvador).

MOFGA - CCR - CORDES logoIn September, the MOFGA-El Salvador Sistering Committee, with funds from Maine Initiatives, the Unity Foundation, two Empty Bowl suppers and several private donors, brought four delegates from the Chalatenango department of El Salvador to Maine to visit farms, markets, colleges, a high school and activists in the area and to participate in the Common Ground Country Fair.

Salvador CruzWe recently returned from a four-month journey to El Salvador, where we had the privilege of living in a remarkable village in the northern department of Chalatenango.
