‘Duborskian’ riceI grew rice this year! And I actually harvested mature rice heads. The entire process entertained me all summer. It has been ages since I grew something about which I knew absolutely nothing. It gave me a glimpse into the world of the new gardener, packet of seed in hand and no idea what comes next. That newness, that blank slate, kept me grinning and marveling.

RiceFor the past two years, Linda and Takeshi Akaogi have been experimenting with growing rice on their small farm in Putney, Vermont. In March 2008, they received a SARE Farmer Grant to evaluate the viability of rice production in the Northeast; to create a supply of seed for interested farmers; and to introduce rice as a commercial crop to this region.

No Jasmati rice logoThe story is the same, only the crop variety and country have been changed. The story is one of small scale farmers who were producing primarily for local markets being told by foreign governments and multinational corporations that they have to change their ways: to monocultures; export crops; synthetic pesticide and fertilizer use; and, eventually, to genetically engineered (GE) crops.
